What is Acid Reflux

What is Acid Reflux? That was what my friend asked when her husband was told that the symptoms of heartburn that he experienced point to a condition known as acid reflux.
Heartburn is just one of the many symptoms that they will experience with an acid reflux. In America today, over 60million Americans or one fifth of the entire population suffer from acid reflux on a monthly basis. About half complain of these symptoms, saying that they experience them everyday.
Acid reflux is commonly caused by the over-production of acid in the stomach and by the inability of the sphincter at the top of the stomach to stop the acid from travelling up the oesophagus. The oesophagus can become seriously damaged and you can even lose your voice. Although acid reflux is not curable, it can be easily controlled by eating a low-acid diet and by taking prescription medications.
